The Super Foods You Need to Improve Your Health

Welcome to the "Super Foods" page of the Smoothie Insider. Your search for better nutrition probably brought you here.

There are certain foods that nutritionists have classified as "super". Many of these foods, you may find, are not on your favorite list of foods to eat. But here is the good news...

...Making smoothies is probably one of the best ways to incorporate these foods that are good for you in an easy and fun drink. You may have heard the term "green smoothies" before? If not, that's OK.

Green Smoothies are really quite delicious. When made properly, you will not taste the vegetables, your smoothie will taste like a yummy fruit smoothie!

Not only that, because the foods have been blended or juiced, your body will absorb more of the vitamins, and nutrients.

smoothie ingredients Dr Steven Pratt wrote and published an amazing book called "Super Foods".

In a nutshell, the types of foods that Dr. Pratt lists as super, have certain qualities he calls phytonutrients, and eating these foods will reinforce your body, keep it healthy, lean , provide longevity. If you are into nutrition books, the "Super Foods" is a must read.

Dr. Pratt believes that "some foods are better than others for your health...i.e. an apple is better for you than a potato chip".

There is a large amount of research to support his work...And there are some startling statistics about trends, such as obesity, chronic illnesses, and so forth.

Other research has shown a direct link to the food we eat and the risk of chronic disease. See what the experts are saying about Super Foods.

Dr. Pratt's book is nicely laid out. If you're into facts and numbers, it's got it...Or if you just want to know the basics, like which foods to start with, and why, it's easy to easy to figure out.

Specific chapters are written for each food group, and the book lists "sidekicks, or substitute foods."

Sidekicks would be closely related to the food group listed, or could be an alternate, so if you don't like pinto beans, maybe eat green beans..you get the idea.

And all the facts are substantiated so the information is very credible. The Smoothie Insider recommends this book.

Here are the major categories of Super Foods Dr. Pratt's book lists as essential to your diet.

  • Beans, as in dried, most types
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli
  • Oats-Whole Grains
  • Oranges
  • Wild Salmon
  • Soy
  • Tea
  • Spinach
  • Turkey
  • Walnuts
  • Yogurt
  • and Tomatoes

Except for maybe turkey or salmon, all the items on this list are perfect candidates for smoothies, fruit, or veggie!

Fruit Smoothie Ingredients When you think of "smoothies" you normally think of fruit smoothies. But did you know that smoothies can also be made out of vegetables?...

...and, they can be made of both fruit and vegetables. You can make your own V8 juice cocktail without all the added salt!

There is a growing trend in the health food arena towards making green smoothies, and vegetable cocktails.

Honestly, a green smoothie may sound unappetizing, but until you have had one, don't judge a book by it's cover. Be sure to visit the recipe pages on green smoothies for some ideas.

OK! This is where common sense can be valuable.

If you can agree on a few basic premises about healthy nutrition, it will make your job easier. Here they are:

* Your body needs nutrients for fuel,

* Much of this will come from plant micro nutrients

* Generally, micro nutrients fight disease and promote growth,

* Sources of micro nutrients are found in super foods, and

* The easier you make it for your body to absorb micro nutrients, the better off you will be.

What better way to do this than to make smoothies a part of your daily healthy diet?

On a side note, have you ever considered the benefits of coconut water? The nutritional value of coconut water is quite high. Coconut water is the latest trend in sports drinks because of the high electrolyte value, but can also be great added to smoothies.
